7 Products to Help You Travel Sustainably

Avoiding plastic and waste when traveling can be very tricky, but why should the environment have to suffer because we want to see the world? With these sustainable products, hopefully you can say no to a few more plastic items while you travel.

1. Bamboo Travel Utensils

This pack of bamboo travel utensils has done wonders for me to save from using plastic to-go ware. It can save you from using plastic to-go ware on a plane to not having to use a plastic straw at a resturant. The pack comes with a fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks and a bamboo straw with a metal pipe cleaner! And it all comes with a nice, small fabric carrying case to keep everything organized. It is the perfect size to keep in your day backpack or purse.

2. LifeStraw Go Filter Water Bottle

I have been using my LifeStraw water bottle for about 6 months now. It has been so helpful to avoid having to buy plastic water bottles all the time, especially when traveling through less developed countries where the water source may be unknown. The creators of this water bottle say that it “protects against bacteria, parasites and microplastics, chlorine and organic chemical matter such as pesticides, herbicides and improves water taste”. This is also helpful when camping and hiking when water sources are not available. And, to top it off, by purchasing the water filter bottle you help give back with LifeStraw’s promise of “one purchase, one child, one year of clean water”.

Travel tip: If you are going to be traveling long-term, buy a few extra carbon filters. They are small enough to fit in your bag and will be needed when you use the bottle a lot!

3. Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

A few years ago I made the switch to shampoo and conditioner bars for their zero waste. Little did I know how perfect they are for traveling! Worried about your 3 oz plastic shampoo bottle spilling all over your suitcase? Not with shampoo and conditioner bars! Worried about not having enough shampoo and conditioner to last you your whole trip? Not with shampoo and conditioner bars! Mine typically last me between 3-6 months and I wash my hair about every other day.

Travel Tip: Be sure to buy a travel tin or upcycle an old small tupperware to store them in. If you can, make sure they are mostly dry before storing them so they don’t get soggy.

4. Pela Biodegradable Phone Case

Pela iPhone case

I have had two Pela phone cases, one for my iPhone 6s and now one for my iPhone XS. I have also convinced almost everyone I know to get one, whether they travel or not! A pela phone case comes is completely compostable and ships with no plastic! The case itself is soft and flexibe but provides great protection. They come in such cute colors and can have little mottos or animals on them. Pela offers cases for iPhones and Androids. I have traveled to many countries with it, dropping my phone many times along the way and never have an issue.

5. Refillable Dental Floss

Dental floss typically comes in tiny little plastic boxes, which can be hard to recycle depending on your location. This glass container is refillable with compostable silk floss. This set comes with floss already in the container along with one refill. Added bonus- the packaging is all biodegradable, including the cellophane bag the refill comes in!

6. Bamboo Toothbrush and Case

Say goodbye to plastic toothbrushes and the plastic travel case that it comes with! This bamboo toothbrush and case set is the perfect travel toiletry. Combining this with that refillable dental floss, you can finally say no to the dentist’s free bag of plastic at your next visit! I purchase this family pack, which comes in 100% recycled paper packaging, and give out the extras during christmas time.

Eco tip: remember to remove bristles, as these are typically nylon, before composting the handle.

7. Reusable Shopping Bag

Buying some fruit from the market? Reusable shopping bag. Going to buy a few souvenirs for family? Reusable shopping bag. The uses are endless. Having a reusable shopping bag that folds up super small has been so helpful in saying no to random plastic bags during my travels. It easily fits in your purse or backpack making it an easy swap! These bags are also machine washable which is helpful when something accidentally spills.

Those are my favorite sustainable travel products that I use and love! Do you have any products that help you stay sustainable on-the-go?
